I Got Your Name

from The Start by Andrew Newton

/

about

From a distance the music plays, like a light to the moth. Ricky T sings of his triumphs, and stomps the rhythm fantastic. He waves people in one by one. Suzy. Then Alex.

It’s been a while since I danced, but it’s a night of taking chances.

They see each other.

Two shy bodies veer closer and closer together, until the space between disappears. Brought by dance, few words are said, but many are understood.

“Hi.”
“Hi.”
“Um, Alex.”
“Suzy.”
“This is, uh...”
“Yeah, I know.”

This won’t be it for her. Out come a napkin and pen from her purse.

“SUZY 555-4945”

This is moving all too fast. Maybe I should just stop this before she inevitably does…breathe…I finally recover…but I’m too late. The man with the machismo has swept in like a vulture.

lyrics

…and the beat keeps me moving
Even from so far away
My two left feet improving
And won’t lead me astray
The man inside waves “Enter!”
To a door alone in light
I am lead towards the center
Of the rhythm of the night

The air is getting thicker and I find it hard to breathe
But still my feet are quicker as they keep me up to speed

I can see you from a distance
Your hair in an endless wave
I can tell in an instance
That my heart need not be brave

I try to say the first word, but you beat me to the chase
It might be absurd, but it put me in my place
This is hard to face…

I got your name
And I got your number
I got your name
I got your name.

I’m not sure what I’m doing
I’m not right for this scene
I’d be better off reviewing
From a distance, neat and clean

I somehow got the courage. I somehow got the nerve.
But now I’m all discouraged, I’ll sit back and observe
And get what I deserve.

You don’t know what I know
So I’ll be first to let go
You’ll avoid my heart destroyed
I’ll keep you safe from the void.

I should have known better, but I followed to the letter
And now I’m all misguided, my path is all divided
I finally recover, but it seems you found another…
