Smile

1.
The best I see in you I see in myself It’s a call from a voice in the choir That sinks into my blood And washes like a flood Or the rage of the wilderness in flames And the undergrowth exposed The seedlings begin to flower And grow to a primeval tower The best I see in you I see in myself It’s a beacon that shines in the night Demands that I stand And takes me by the hand I stumble down the grand majestic halls Stop only to find A table and an open book I hesitate to take a look… It’s difficult to know for sure Lie awake at night Hoping that I’m right But the ancient book is closed secure The magic left behind And all my sins are swept away I’m still here to fight another day The best I see in you

Smile 04:04
Standing on the North Pole, I slide to the equator This move's unending, and once again I freeze Caught in first and final act, the moment here is greater More than I expected, I fall into you with ease. But not even a photograph to take as a memento Just flashes in my mind, it’s not enough to hold I left before the morning light, I missed the crescendo Back to the wilderness, back into the cold I will never see you smile But the best that I can hope for When you think of me, you smile If you think of me At all A life of poetry I scan here from a distance The missed potential is my wayward path in stride But still, a memory far away is brought back in an instance A door closed long before, a future left denied I will never see you smile….

Falling Down 03:47
We talked all through the night My head all full of wine And so I dropped you home But then I thought Was there a look there in your eyes? Were we more than “feeling fine”? And now I’m stuck here, left to roam All alone Is this my state of mind? Try to go up, I fall down I’m paralyzed Lie on the floor When I look around I’m still falling down You gave the wink, you gave the look A page turner in an open book But still I turned away I must be blind I shook my head when I should have said “yes” Should leave in the past, now I only obsess You’d think I’d make it through a day What should I say? I’ll try to look ahead It’s the only way to go The floor spins I’m falling down
4.
I must have went out when I fell to the ground Don’t know where I am, though the leaves all around Brush them off gently, the sun starts to rise I try hard to focus my eyes The orange horizon, the changing of hue Spider webs cling to the mid-morning due Feel the bones creak as I try to stand tall But I haven’t the knowledge at all The morning runs into the noon A house in the distance, the smoke from a fire Walk toward swiftly so I might retire But no one is here, only ashes remain The demon has sung his refrain The moment has left us too soon The sun now fades back to the moon

I only meant to make you smile But it seems I might have gone too far Though I should have known all the while That your smile is the Northern Star It carried me home When I was lost and alone The fire left behind Just a spark in my mind And it’s true what they say That every dog has its day And I waited for years I only meant to make you laugh Though it seems I may have overreached So I’ll keep this photograph And leave it on this empty beach To remind me of you And all the things that you do With the sea as the frame And the sky as the flame And I hear what they say When the clouds blow away And I waited for years I only meant to hold your hand I thought that it would come and go But now I finally understand When before, I thought I’d never know It’s a world rearranged And on the surface it’s strange Though a calmness inside At the turn of the tide Makes the heart full of light With the end now insight And I waited for years

Aftermath 04:00
As long as I get out of this town It’s a miracle that we made it out alive With the chaos and mayhem, no one could survive Though we drank all the water, the taste lingers inside Can’t wash out the ashes Can’t unsee the flashes Do you remember when we talked about the night before? That seems like a lifetime ago, didn’t know what was in store Now we sit here in fire and dust, the sight of open war We have past the collision We must make a decision I chose to race ahead But the weight holds me down So I will crawl instead As long as I get out of this town These shackles aren’t real The weight that I feel Is all in the mind But still, it’s entwined Let me out! I can’t force you to join me when I go If this burden’s too heavy, you can let me know Now the moon shines brightly, and the stars are all a glow I will leave before morning There’ll be no second warning I chose to race ahead But the weight holds me down So I will crawl instead As long as I get out of this town
8.
It’s not too late, it’s not too late But don’t hesitate, don’t hesitate The labyrinth starts, and see Must go from A to B And if you hurry fast, You will reach home at last But you better watch your step Or you’re going to hurt yourself If you need an alibi I’ll be right here by your side We’ll find our way out We’ll find our way out Take this hammer, break the walls down Nothing but dust and broken mortar As we play by the rules that they taught us in schools We will always be lost. It’s a hell of a cost If we forge our own path, it might seem like blind wrath But we’ll reach our goals And we’ll save our souls We’ll find our way out We’ll find our way out We’ll find our way out We’ll find our way out ‘cause we’ll fight our way out.
9.
Lie awake with me We can watch the sun rise Lie awake with me Now let’s watch the clouds go by The weight of the world Away and unfurled And not any care When I know you are there Feeling light as air Keep me close, don’t let me float away Feeling light as air Hold me fast, when night turns to day At times when I rest A weight off my chest The sun says goodnight And still there’s a light Lie awake with me

Not a thing for me here And it’s worse than I feared This house that was once a home Has burned to the ground And I find I am bound To a future that’s never shown So I head to the West Where they say they know best And I can finally start anew Still the weight holds me back And I’m given no slack My options are far and few But a voice says: “Get on your feet and stand your ground” This horizon is strange What I left is out of range These mountains, a curtain black Try to see through the lines But the sun never shines Though a single ray lights a track So I follow the lead And I hope I succeed ‘Cause the weight I can bear no more Now it seems like the end And my back starts to bend The darkness has settled the score But a voice says: “Get on your feet and stand your ground” I hear the sound I turn around An angel shining bright I hold your hand We cross this land To our refuge from the night This darkened night

about

Originally conceived during the height of lockdown. The universe might knock us down, but we have to get up, dust ourselves off, and keep moving forward.
