When The Time Is Right

by Andrew Newton

1.
And you will finally see What this means to me And you will stay the night But only when the time is right It seems we met too early I was only seventeen The mistakes I made were plenty And the slate was left unclean You know that we were only kids then Though you haven’t aged a day And I’m losing strength to keep the lions at bay So I give you my word And you can rest assured I will only make my move At the point when you approve Now my features may have faded And I’m no one’s state fair prize Any confidence or credence Just a thinly veiled disguise But we can fight each other’s battles We can dry each other’s tears We can win this race we’ve run for all these years But only when the time is right Paths unfold, and life goes on But all these doubts will soon be gone The finish line’s in sight But only when the time is right …and when the time is right You will stay the night And we can win this fight And the finish line’s in sight And this race will end tonight And the future will be bright When the time is right …but the time is never right

I was lost and insecure And the words I chose were poor And it’s true that when the love is gone We can’t be forced to carry on But I could have shared a kiss & made you smile And let you know that it was worth the while I could have said a line to make you laugh But now the moment is a photograph There must be other ways to say goodbye Where I don’t have to watch you cry I replayed that moment a thousand times I think I felt it in my heart And I knew right from the start That the fairytale was done And we’d no more feel the sun But I could have hesitated, could have lied, I could have celebrated that we tried Instead I stumbled in the black And said the words I can’t take back There must be other ways… That hair, those eyes That smile Those moonlit curves can’t keep me here But the clouds I formed will never really clear Those words ring in my ear So I should disappear There must be other ways… Though the night was dark and cold There was a fire, truth be told And I would burn for years for all my crimes

More than a lifetime since the buffalo roamed And we’re far from home Where your seeds are sewn But once in a while, with your ear to the ground The herds head down And you can hear the sound A thunder in the distance And grows in persistence We must raise our heads And turn ourselves around Driving fast, home at last Far from foreign skies So, we must finally navigate by the stars No ships, planes, or cars On a path that is ours The road is elusive, but you’re here by my side In the end, I tried To the wall, we collide Now the gates are on lockdown Through the suburbs and downtown We must raise our heads And turn ourselves around Driving fast, home at last Far from foreign skies See the window, look outside, flags of red become unfurled For the one who spits out hate and lies, and then we let him rule the world People marching in the streets, block the road, I cannot pass But tooth and nail I will fight to feel my feet upon the grass And I’m sorry For my neighbour For this mess you made Driving fast, home at last Far from foreign skies

I take the stage and hit the spotlight You show the masses to their place Night in, night out, we share a common space I need that friendly face And now I get a taste We watched the bright lights dance at midnight The red and green of Northern skies And I know, I know, this wasn’t a surprise The look that’s in your eyes Constellations in disguise And from this place, I’d never leave I thought for sure my search was over A confidence I never felt before It’s a chance you take when you never know the score And the crowd shouts for more So you walk right out that door You couldn’t stay, and I couldn’t leave And now you’re far across the country This is not the path that I would choose But it’s my own damn fault I’m here singing the blues Actions I can’t excuse And in the end, I lose You couldn’t stay, I couldn’t leave Now the truth is that I’m running on empty But it doesn’t mean this road’s at an end So I’ll leave behind my seven and twenty And I’ll try to find the strength to take that stage again And hope, when it’s time, I can leave.
5.
They’re targeting our oceans They’re aim is on our farms The forest is in their crosshairs And we’re finally up in arms I don’t care if you don’t like me I don’t need you as a friend But it’s time we pulled together And bring the madness to an end No, we can’t be blind To a force designed For the purpose to erase the past And leave us all behind This time we stand This time we rise And we never saw this coming Though the path was very clear We’re too busy saying “Sorry” For small offences from our peers I don’t care if you’re not perfect It doesn’t mean a thing at all But we shouldn’t be afraid of standing If our only fear is that we fall And if it takes all night We will stay and fight Against a power that will try to push The masses to the right This time we stand This time we rise You can live your life and I’ll live mine Save our quarrel for another time But right now I can spare a dime And if you’re by my side When the worlds collide We can lay the path And let the future know at least we tried. This time we stand This time we rise

Well, I think I’ll just sit this one out It’s fun while it lasts But now the time has past I’ll back away slowly And I know it was never in doubt The hurt we feel The wounds that are yet to heel For a fight we propped up holy Now the bell rings The crowd sings Time to start a new round But I think I’ll just sit this one out Well, I think I’ll just pass by it all We’ve fought so long You know I’m not that strong But maybe, when I was younger I’d go on with this unending brawl I’d find the might To go all through the night But I’ve long ago lost that hunger Still, the bell rings The crowd sings They’re all looking for blood But I think I’ll just pass by it all We both want to stay I will back away Bruised, but still on my feet And I’ll have to scratch The final match Face the pending defeat You’ve won this round And though it means you won’t see me around I think I’ll just sit this one out.

No Encore 04:43
Waiting in anticipation Peeking through the backstage door Memories of adulation Once before What started as a need for glory A need to show the world my face Has turned into another story One I can’t embrace I’ve grown accustomed to the limelight I think it’s all I’ve ever known And now, the final act’s in twilight Next, unknown So one more time, I fix my make-up One more time, I run my lines Give my nerves a final shake-up I receive the sign And now I face toward the crowd And I sing my heart aloud Will there be an encore? I’m ready for the final curtain I’m here to take the final bow The future seemed to be uncertain Until now The roaring crowd is now in silence They wait for me to leave the stage But still I stand here in defiance In old age, in my cage No flowers, no applause Just the faded memory of what once was There will be no encore There will be no prize No tributes will arise The curtain falls and dies.

I used to breathe in Northern air The lights dance in the sky And hike along the mighty river Watch the boats go by A spark that lit the candle bright And soon became a flame In a land I could just disappear In a wild I could not tame But I thought the answers waited In another place and time So I hurried south, wandered east To try to earn a dime You can stake your claim, you can plant your seed You can try to build a home You fight the urge to run away Fight the need to roam Don’t you get too old To find those dreams of gold And now I wait behind the wheel I’m stuck here on the Bloor And head into the office To wage the corporate war I punch in numbers, punch the clock Every day remains the same And I try to hit a steady target But I’ve lost my aim Don’t you get… The kids have all grown up now Mother’s gone away I pack my bags and say good-bye Start another day Like the Chilkoot Pass before me I will blaze into the cold Those icy skies are always waiting With their dreams of gold
