Crying (for Victoria)

from What It Is, Too by Andrew Newton

/

about

In late 2007 I was made aware of a song writing contest being put on by my former performing arts college, with the theme related to the school and being a performer. This song started as an attempt to enter that contest, but it became obvious that it wasn't what certain officials would be looking for. All I kept thinking of was all the activities that included breathing deeply, and people crying as a result.

lyrics

"You don't know my name, but I'll make sure that this will change.
Soon it will be shining on the marquee.
I started far away without that much to say.
Now, all in our naivety, will get things under way!"

Lying on this cold wood floor, I don't think I can take much more.
Take these toys away, and let's start moving.
I have to get away, but all that you can say is,
"Learn to breathe, learn to breathe."
But when I try to breathe down low, all those walls just stay right where they are.
Am I the only one moving on, and who isn't crying?

This time I will ask, "Is this the proper task?"
Keeping me at number three to live behind a mask
While limelight goes to Golden Boys and Giants in the Sky.
My true voice is left behind, and life just passes by.
But now that voice is coming back in a world of chords and melody.
And it's good to see that life carries on without the crying.

You are still my friends.
Comrades 'til the end.

Take a breathe and take my hand. Now at least we understand.
Maybe that's what led me here across this sky and land.
Dreams of fame I never had, now trapped inside my head.
But the cold winds roam and take me home,
And I think of all you said.

And every word that came in between
And the souls that fell who are no more seen
And everyone who rose up above
And those who saw a glimpse of love
And those who hold a torch in the night
And those who can't tell wrong from right
And those who learned to breathe down low
And keep on crying.
